Attending OpenOffice Conference in Hungarian Parliament

It was nice to participate to the opening sessions of the open office conference #oocon here at Budapest, Hungary where they were looking back at the past 10 years and celebrating its 10th Birthday. Impressive movement and achievements globally and particular very interesting to see how this community has delivered in a spirit of openness. Open Office has really saved several 100 millions of Euros to governments across and made office available to the common man.

Congratulations to the oo team and wish all the success in future!!

MeeGo The largest OS Platform talent pool in the planet @ Akademy

This was a nice and comprehensive slide which shows the momentum and force with which MeeGo as an open platform is coming up. As the slide states this is the largest open source platform with the largest talent pool in the world.

The presentation was interestingly titled as : "MeeGo redefining the linux desktop landscape". I liked the over all presentation specially the forecast of Qt on how it would surpass competition. I agree with the message from one of the representative from the crown saying that it is flattening way to early :-)

Office Dashboard in Corporate from Cebit 2010

Saw this interesting office dashboard or a enterprise cockpit room which might come handy to look at the overall business reports together might be an interesting environment with information overload but in a structured way.. Guess the complexity is several times higher that what is seen here. This is certainly something that the walls should be built to be a screen instead of multiple screens.

KDE's Akademy at Tampere

2 weeks ago I was at Akademy in Tampere for the first time and loved what I saw. All of them had one thing in common surely is passion and were all excited in what they were presenting so this was a very energizing on a weekend. In the evening there was a party and we were also watching soccer and partying together with about 200+ KDE community member . Nice key note presentations from both Valtteri about MeeGo Platform - Redefining the linux desktop landscape and Reaching For Greatness by Aaron Seigo (KDE) nice style of presentations. Got some good feedback and comments about being involved with KOffice project in the KDE projects. This was good to hear.

Almost about 600 people posing for a group picture this was fun doing a wave there.

Tampere had some comic festival on the weekend so we saw a lot of people decked up as Japanese Comic characters. There was a festive mood in Tampere specially with such a warm day. Met a lot of new people and advanced a lot of discussion about KOffice with the KOffice team and KDELibs with Kevin and team on how they are modularizing this as this is particularly interesting and related to the libkok used by KOffice in the #Freoffice available on the N900 device. Heard and saw interesting presentations and demos overall the new things I saw was Simon(speech recognition software in KDE), KStar though have heard of them before.

Another i think was good at the event was the demo Vandenover showed about the ODF Kit this looked nice and the progress made is impressive in such a short time frame. This could hold the potential similar to how webkit turned out. Good work on this.

This weekend at the Linux Hotel in Essen, Germany attended #KOffice developer sprint. This place is excellent for such sprint meeting. Will upload some nice pictures of this place

I was at this Futur Parc at cebit 2010 where I saw this amazing user interface. This was surprisingly perfect. All I had to do is look through the system to navigate the options and make selections. When I stared at a particular place I could make the UI Selection like clicking a button. I could scroll up or down by just moving my eyes. The presenter at the booth expected that this technology to shrink to a small size tofit into a mobile device is still 4 - 5 years ahead. Looking forward for that day. Enjoy the video.

Can Brain computing enable new ways to interact with systems

I was at CEBIT 2010 last week. In the Futur Parc I saw this demo from a university who were demonstrating that it is possibile think of something and interact with computers such as selecting buttons or then type text such as show in the Video.

It seems like a promising technology if it matures to be faster and infact be hidden inside a nice looking cap instead of this.

What do you think ?

It was nice see the this Video published by Stanford about how Firefox/Mozzila have scaled up while following a choardic design. It is how innovations can happen in the open while balancing between choatic innovation to an ordered means to filter out noise and provide value to the end user finally.This is long but very informative.

I suppose this is a way any open source project should think of organizing itself to scale in terms of growing the community while maturing the software quality making the developed asset usable by real users..

Future of Mobile Interactions -

Here is an interesting video by Pranav Mistry from MIT Media Lab.

It was particularly nice to see where the ideas for his research is coming from and how he approached this. This is what i was missing in the previous presentation by Pattie Maes from MIT. Very well presented. I am impressed with the motivation and also since they plan to open source this. This is the way to go to see real and wide adoption.

The inspiration and innovations for Pranav as he said is coming from his needs from making technology affordable. Making it free or so slow that anyone can afford it and use it. Lots of interesting concepts that have been realized here. Good research !!

Co-Creation @ Maemo Summit

When I was at Maemo Summit in October I realized after the session that there was a Co-creation session where community members brainstormed about new ideas for developed.

I picked up a few things that was interesting to me particularly considering the Mobile Office.
#1. Live Editing: This is like quick document creation using the capabilities of Mobile device, adding some description, media from the camera and sharing it immediately with your mobile peers or your remote team member. This reminds me ActiveNotes what we developed in Nokia in the past in S60 devices.

2.NRich: This very interesting idea and could be very powerful and could enable end user real time mashupand use within a UI of existing applications.

What do you think will help you when working with documents, creating text, notes and using multimedia for documentation specially using Camera, GPS, Audio/Video recorders.

What sort of uses do you have for Office applications on your device ?

Mobile Office based on KOffice for Maemo 5

Just made a presentation and demo of KOffice for Maemo 5 UI. Here is the video of the KOffice running on Maemo 5. This Office UI will be open sourced and will be available for download from Maemo extras-devel respository soon. The Office UI developed for Maemo 5 will be open sourced and if you want to contribute join us at maemo.gitorious.org to mature this application for making it end user ready and if you are interested to improve the core of the Office Engine join the KOffice community.

The KOffice supports ODF and MS Office formats. The basically means that KOffice on Maemo 5 benefits from this and hence we have the first ODF complaint Office viewer which can also handle MS Office formats.

Green Cups made of Leaves

I was at our Bangalore Office couple of weeks ago. I saw these green cups at the coffee bar. This instantly reminded me of traditional life style in India. If you go to India to a traditional restuarants even today in South India you might be served food on Bananna Leaves. well this was the way of life atleast a decade ago and now this is limited to Indian festival days.

Isn't this sustainable way of living in harmony with the world around us ? This atleast doesn't require cutting down trees unlike paper cups and plates used in western world. Maybe this should be adapted more wider to increase green awareness.

Maybe we should roll back and unlearn several things to live greener.

Making of Active Notes @ Research Lab

One of the interesting projects I was responsible for was Active Notes research at NRC, The project finally resulted into a productized Nokia Active Notes on E-Series devices.

Active Notes is a fundamental tool in Office enabling mobile user to take notes and put down ideas into a digital form. Well this should not mandate that everything needs to be typed in manually. You might want to use the White board to discuss the topic a bit more in detail with your colleagues. The Nokia Active Notes allows you to also capture such data as pictures using your mobile camera into the notes you are making. At the same time the ActiveNotes can also capture the audio conversation that you are engaged into. Active Notes is that it is a Multi Media Note Taking Application. One interesting aspect of this application is that it is possible to link a Note to a person in your Contacts. When you receive a call next time from this person all the Notes related to this person will appear as a context for your conversation or as a reminder.

This Note taken can be then transferred as a HTML page which you should be able to easily publish to any web site, What can really beat this ? This is one of the coolest application I have used in Work place.

Not always all innovations can be made usable for a large audience and hence interesting features did not make it into the final product. For example in NRC we developed much interactive behaviour to Active Notes. Just for clarification the below is part of research and prototyping at NRC and is not available in any product.

If the Note included a TODO for example Contact Bob and if you call Bob or Bob calls you this note is made available automatically and then the TODO is marked as completed at the end of the call. This makes it easy to manage your tasks. ActiveNote was also called as a "MINI CRM" in one of the blogs.

If the Note is linked to a location or a person the Notes can be activated and provided as a reminder to the user based on proximity and events that occured.

If you regularly participate to teleconference using mobile phones and you own a Nokia phone. Here is a simple tip which can make your life easy.

Create a contact and add a phone number with the following format: +358504321111pPINCODE#PASSCODE# please note the use of "p" and "#" in the phone number. The conference details will be sent as DTMF to the teleconference bridge reducing the need for you to type in these details each time you call to the same place.

Interesting usage of Mobile FM Receivers..

Last year I was attending an event in Finland @ Grand Marina Congress. When a group of travelers from Latvia arrived at the same event. All of them in the group had thier mobile phones with thier headset connected. I started to wonder why the whole group were hooked up to music at the event for a second it sounded crazy to me. Then I found the leader of the group was using an FM Transmitter talking to all them and was translating the speech in real-time to thier own language.

It was a very interesting application of Mobile FM receiver which I never thought of such usage, this opened my views on all sorts of new solutions when one has a need one will figure out new applications of similar manner with existing solution around you.
